National Cordova Ice Worm Day 2024: We commemorate National Cordova Ice Worm Day on February 3. Beneath the glacier ice of Alaska’s frigid north is a species so strange that it has its celebration. Its name suggests something from a fantastical book, and the environments in which it lives are unfriendly to most other living things. Naturally, we’re talking about the Cordova ice worm. A festival honoring this species is conducted annually to cheer up the locals and show that there’s always reason to celebrate, even in the dead of winter!

National Cordova Ice Worm Day History

In 1961, local city planners determined that a big celebration was required to remember the town’s history and learn more about the unusual species that lived close to glaciers and snowfields. This led to the creation of the first National Cordova Ice Worm Day. A mascot development competition was held at the first event, and the winner received $15 and a spot in the parade honors.

The outcome was nothing short of spectacular: a 150-foot-long terrorist with 74 legs, a monstrous head, and vicious eyes. The bright and inspirational ice worm has left a lasting impression on the people living there.

It included beard-growing competitions, fishing competitions, and a beauty pageant featuring the Iceworm Queen.

To highlight the ridiculousness of the occasion, a skiing race from the Mile 5 bridge to the Davis Store would be organized. Cordovans celebrated the festival annually after these amazing events captured their hearts.

Ice worms were discovered in the 1800s. Its goal, however, is mainly to cheer up cold-weather-depressed people. Despite the shorter days, this weeklong celebration still starts in late January and lasts through early February.

This event is all about having fun; most of the town’s other festivals are focused on sustainability or education. In addition to the communal meeting, people also celebrate the return of light and the lengthening of the days. Naturally, the Ice Worm Board, a local volunteer board, organizes it with assistance from nearby companies.
