Release your imagination on May 30, National Creativity Day! Except for nature, many objects in our lives were the product of someone’s imagination. Artists, writers, sculptors, filmmakers, chefs, landscapers, and architects, among others — this special day was created to honour and commemorate everyone who creates something new every day, including you!
Different perspectives exist regarding the history of creativity. Some believe it originated in the prehistoric era, when early humans covered themselves with leaves and developed hunting tools. Others believe it originated with the Aborigines of Australia. They had migrated from India to Australia, where they invented the boomerang, an exceedingly inventive hunting tool. People also have a tendency to believe that creativity originated in ancient Egypt, Mexico, and Asia. Pyramids, geometry, astronomy, and production and scientific advancements are all examples of a creative disposition.
The term ‘creativity’ itself has evolved over time, adapting to how various cultures view it. When it came to creating art, the ancient Greeks preferred to avoid freedom of action in favour of following the norms, a practise that contemporary creative individuals do not favour. The Greeks lacked a term equivalent to ‘creativity’, with one exception: the word ‘poiein’ (which means ‘to make’) specifically referred to ‘poiesis’ (‘poetry’) and the ‘poietes’ (‘poet’ or’maker’). Romans created a new vocabulary, literature, art, and, most notably, sculptures after the Greeks. Christianity in the Middle Ages gave a new meaning to the term ‘creativity.’ The Latin term ‘creatio’ referred to God’s ‘creatio ex nihilo’ (‘creation from nothing’) act. Later modifications to this definition made it possible for creativity to exist independently of art; it was no longer solely associated with art. Creativity flourished in every aspect of life, including politics, economics, society, art, philosophy, science, and education, during the Renaissance, which is regarded as the most creative period in history.
The last decade has been marked by revolution, with science taking a keen interest in creative ability. National Creativity Day was founded by Hal Croasmun, a film producer and the president of ScreenwritingU, to encourage us to cultivate our creativity and to inspire others to do the same.
