The 20th of September is National Crime and Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day, which honours the work of crime and intelligence analysts in the United States, and it couldn’t come at a better moment. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, there are presently more than three million federal, state, and local law enforcement officers employed throughout the United States. With so many individuals devoted to national defence, it is easy for analysts to feel neglected. Nonetheless, without the diligent work of these analysts, police officers would not be able to perform their duties as efficiently, and this is especially true today.
Crime analysts acquire and analyse data from a variety of locations and sources. It could include anything from police records to government statistics or even social media networks — whatever it takes to gain insight into criminal activity so those police departments can better comprehend what’s going on in their communities. The information they uncover is used to inform police officers about the most effective ways to combat crime and to educate citizens about how to protect themselves. Identifying trends in criminal behaviour assists law enforcement in predicting when and where crimes may occur, allowing them to allocate resources where they are most required.
The Florida Crime & Intelligence Analyst Association (F.C.I.A.A.) initiated National Crime & Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day in 2021. The organisation was founded in 1995 as a non-profit to promote the professional development of Intelligence Analysts and investigators. With over 200 members across the state, it has become a pillar of intelligence analysis, providing analysts of all levels with education, training, and networking opportunities.
In late 2019, the F.C.I.A.A. began developing certification courses for law enforcement analysts. These courses were designed to provide their members with the necessary training to improve their analytical skills and increase their career competitiveness. The objective was to establish an organisation that would unite police intelligence analysts, crime analysts, and other criminal justice professionals for networking, resource sharing, and continuing education.
