Dandelion is a perennial, herbaceous, tap-rooted plant indigenous to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Once dandelion flowers have dried and shed their petals and stamens, they assume a spherical form.

On April 5, we celebrate National Dandelion Day. Dandelions are members of a large genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae family. This flower is also edible and was once native to Eurasia. Now, you can find dandelions all over the world. European travellers brought the flora to North America. Dandelion is a perennial plant with a reputation for withstanding severe conditions. Inspiring and picturesque is the sight of dandelion seeds floating on the wind to reach new growing grounds. This day is dedicated to honouring the flower’s unique characteristics and its adaptability, which have contributed to its global success.

The background of National Dandelion Day

Dandelion is a perennial, herbaceous, tap-rooted plant indigenous to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Once dandelion flowers have dried and shed their petals and stamens, they assume a spherical form. When the seeds are mature, fluffy structures resembling parachutes are affixed to their tips, allowing them to take flight. The wind disperses the seeds, which have the ability to travel very great distances.

We believe the dandelion evolved in Eurasia approximately 30 million years ago. Our prehistoric progenitors were well aware of the plant’s edible and medicinal qualities. Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, and Romans were familiar with the plant’s properties. It was popular in the United States for its palatable applications and in China for its medicinal properties.

The nutritional value of raw dandelion greens includes calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, and numerous vitamins. Additionally, the flower can be used to create a yellow dye. In numerous regions of the world, this plant is considered an invasive species. It can influence the growth of other plants, disseminate rapidly, and spread far. However, it can also be beneficial to plants when planted appropriately. Its roots can penetrate deeply and deliver nutrients to shallow-rooted plants. Additionally, it can attract pollinating insects.
