National Day of Listening 2023: National Day of Listening, observed on November 26, the day after Thanksgiving, is an opportunity to practice the skill of listening. It is a time to escape the chaos of the world in order to simply unwind, listen, and be heard. It is an unofficial day to practice listening, and we are encouraged to record stories from our families and communities. Good listeners combat melancholy and become more acquainted with individuals from various backgrounds; therefore, active listening is strongly advised.

National Day of Listening 2023: History

National Day of Listening was established in 2008 by StoryCorps, a national oral history initiative. The voluntary mission of StoryCorps, a non-profit organization, is to provide Americans with the opportunity to narrate, document, and preserve the stories that have shaped their lives. They compile and archive the results of the interviews that they conduct at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. In 2003, radio personality Dave Isay established the organization. He delighted in spending time with his elders while listening to their tales. It was his decision to record their anecdotes and their reflections on life in general; all who listened adored them. Unfortunately, following their passing, he misplaced the tape. This prompted him to formulate the ingenious concept that became StoryCorps.

As the organization diligently observed, individuals appreciate being listened to because it instills in them a feeling of significance. Individuals feel inherently valued by those who listen to them, be they neighbors, loved ones, or the entire community. The purpose of the Day of Listening is to foster societal connection through the sharing of the stories of disparate individuals. It occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving, providing the ideal opportunity for families and friends to extend their gatherings.

Dialogue can occur in any location, including one’s residence, social media platform, seashore, bus, or train. Unintentionally, we frequently participate in conversations with those in our vicinity. Amazingly subtle despite its inherent simplicity, this concept is quite remarkable. National Day of Listening facilitates the exchange of sincere understanding between generations and cultures, providing us with a positive link and vision to carry on to future cohorts.
