In 2002, in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001, the American government initiated a crackdown on all Muslim and Arab immigrants through the newly created Department of Homeland Security.
Americans observe the National Day of Solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian Immigrants on February 20 as an act of humanity. Following the infamous September 11 attacks, the day is marked by a display of support for the affected groups and the organisation of special events to condemn the unjust treatment meted out to them in the United States. Long before the government began incarcerating Muslim and Arab immigrants, numerous Americans protested the violation of their rights. This day strengthens the support shown to minority groups who have been harmed.
In 2002, in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001, the American government initiated a crackdown on all Muslim and Arab immigrants through the newly created Department of Homeland Security. The government rounded up and incarcerated nearly two thousand people. This unjust treatment prompted some groups, including Muslim groups and non-religious groups, to launch a campaign in solidarity with not only Muslims and Arabs, but also South Asian immigrants who were treated unfairly decades ago. The movement resulted in the observance of the first National Day of Solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian Immigrants.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States were without a doubt heinous and cowardly acts that continue to affect the lives of many citizens. The attacks cost millions of dollars and more than 2,000 American lives. Its effects continue to be felt today. However, as grave as the act was, it does not justify the unjust treatment of groups for which no evidence of involvement in the attacks could be found. Therefore, the words of the famous Nazi pastor of the mid-20th century, Martin Niemoeller, haunted many and compelled them to speak out against the government’s unjust retaliation.
After nearly a decade had passed since the attack, some politicians continued to preach the subjugation of Muslims. Notable among them is Congressman Peter King, who in 2011 delivered a number of anti-Muslim speeches without substantiated evidence to support his claims. This is why the day is still observed twenty years later: to continue the fight against discrimination against Muslim and Arab immigrants.
