National Devon Day 2023: Every December 5, we celebrate National Devon Day to honour Devons in our lives. Devonians are nurturing, compassionate, and caring. National Devon Day is celebrated on December 5 to honour Devonians worldwide. Devon entered the U.S. popularity charts in 1960. Devon was in the female naming charts from 1977 to 2005. It is unisex, even though it’s most common with men, and no longer appears on female naming charts. The name nearly made the 1990s top 100 male names.

It is not an altered spelling of Devin, the Irish-Gaelic personal name. Devon comes from an English surname. Devon County, southwest England, was named after a Celtic tribe, the ‘Dumnonii.’ They lived here when the Romans invaded Britain around 50 A.D. The ‘Brythonic’ Celts. Their language provided ‘Devnent,’ meaning ‘deep valley dwellers.’ Devon is related to the French word ‘Devin,’ meaning ‘divine person.’ The name was first spelt ‘Le Devin’ in the 12th century. 1840 only four Devon families lived in New York, while most were in the U.K. in 1891.
