National Dissertation Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Ph.d Degrees

National Dissertation Day is celebrated annually on April 26 as a reminder to students to get back on track and finish their dissertations. Each year in the United States, only fifty percent of students who enrol in doctoral programmes obtain their doctorates. This means that 50,000 students are leaving doctoral programmes because they cannot complete their dissertations. In contrast, those with doctoral degrees earn at least $20,000 more annually than those with master’s degrees. A excellent investment return! Check out these graduate student scholarships if you need financial assistance for your education.

The background of National Dissertation Day

National Dissertation Day was created in 2018 by Dr. Russell Strickland, founder and CEO of Dissertation Done, to emphasise the significance of submitting your dissertation on time. Dr. Strickland identified the mercenary approach to completing a dissertation by emphasising that the dissertation process costs students at least $40,000 per year and that deferring its completion for two, three, or more years is irrational.

There are numerous research-based doctoral degrees awarded in various disciplines, but the dissertation is a requirement for all of these degrees.

Since antiquity, dissertations or, alternatively, theses have been an integral element of the doctoral programme. The origin of the word ‘thesis’ is Greek, where it means’something set forth.’ “dissertation” is derived from the Latin word “dissertti,” which means “discussion.” The term thesis was first defined by Aristotle as a hypothesis or a statement that may or may not be true depending on the evidence or proof.

5 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT PH.D. DEGREES

Due to the commitment and dedication required, less than one percent of the population attains a Ph.D.

The term ‘philosophy’ in Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) translates to ‘love of wisdom’ from the Greek ‘philosphia.’

About half of those who receive a traditional Ph.D. are hired as faculty members.

Not all subject areas offer doctoral degree programmes.

Some universities award honorary doctorates to recognise and honour individuals for their contributions to their respective fields.
