On National Do-It-Yourself Day, held annually on April 2, it’s all about doing the work yourself. Do-it-yourself, or D.I.Y. as it is commonly abbreviated, is the act of creatively completing tasks that would normally be outsourced. These include construction, decoration, maintenance, and renovation. The Craft Box Girls team devised this day to inspire fellow crafters and spark the creative interests of people of all ages and genders across the country.
The background of National DIY Day
DIY is a self-made culture that pertains to both large and small projects, such as house flipping and hair cutting. People have been doing it themselves for a lengthier period of time than you might think. When it was not possible to look up a name and phone number in a phone book or search online for local artisans, people relied on their own abilities and advice to complete tasks.
Basilicata had a temple-like structure in the sixth century B.C., and just like our modern instruction manuals, it contained instructions on how to mass-produce its components and how they fit together to form the structure. Italian archaeologists discovered these ruins, which are now known as “an ancient IKEA building.”
Early in the twentieth century, magazines such as “Popular Mechanics” and “Mechanix Illustrated” were published to provide users with the practical skills and techniques necessary to develop certain tools, and by the middle of the same century, D.I.Y. had become a common term and practise for those completing home improvement projects and smaller creative tasks.
By the late twentieth century, several television programmes and channels were devoted to DIY. The development of the internet and the World Wide Web also led to a breakthrough for do-it-yourself (DIY) initiatives, as it became simpler to access videos and blogs devoted to creative self-improvement.
Craft Box Girls, founded by craft expert Lynn Lilly, is one of the creative sites that provide simple access to Do-It-Yourself projects. These projects include home decor projects, virtual craft programs, and even children’s craft projects. The Craft Box Girls team devised National Do-It-Yourself Day in 2016.
