National Dog Day is on August 26, and we are preparing to honour all our furry companions in the finest possible ways! Our furry companions have been with us for at least 14,000 years; can you believe it? What would we do without man’s best companion, thank goodness! It is time to express your affection for your dog with the world by baking a cake and taking pictures of them.

National Dog Day was established by companion and family lifestyle advocate Colleen Paige in 2004.

The purpose of promoting this day is to increase awareness about adopting animals from rescue centres.

The background of National Dog Day

This holiday was established in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate Colleen Paige. She devised this day so that all dogs could be celebrated, as well as to raise awareness about the number of dogs in shelters and to encourage the adoption of those who have yet to find a home. Colleen’s family adopted her Sheltie when she was 10 years old, making August 26 an important date for her.

Since its inception in 2004, National Dog Day has expanded and is now celebrated globally. In 2013, the holiday was inscribed into New York law, which can be viewed on the website of the New York State Senate.

Those in charge of the holiday have joined forces with numerous rescue organisations, including the Humane Society of the United States and West Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue, to disseminate the word further. Together, they raise awareness of the number of homeless canines and actively encourage individuals seeking a dog to visit an adoption shelter rather than a pet store.

It is estimated that approximately one million dogs have been spared through adoption in the United States since 2004. National Dog Day has become a day for dog owners who aren’t seeking to expand their family to celebrate the bond we’ve developed with dogs over thousands of years and to treat their dog like the legend they are.

Colleen Paige, the creator of the holiday, also uses it to highlight the numerous contributions that canines make to our society. Dogs play an essential role, from putting their lives at risk to aid law enforcement in locating bombs or drug dealers to assisting those in need. Currently, canines can detect cancer in patients.

National Dog Day has also used its platform to promote the ownership of all dog breeds, both mixed and pure, and to advocate for the right of all dogs to live joyful, abuse-free lives.

National Dog Day continues to gain in prominence and is on an upward trend. Each year, it is extensively covered in the media, and rescue homes provide the crucial exposure they need to spread their message. Whether you choose to celebrate by volunteering at a rescue home, donating to a shelter, or giving your furry companion an extra-long hug, be sure to spend this day recognising how awesome dogs are.
