National Dream Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

People are typically led to believe that dreams are similar to fairytales in that they are meant to be read but never realised.

Annually observed on March 11, National Dream Day encourages individuals to pursue their aspirations. The holiday was designed to remind everyone, young and elderly, that they can build and pursue their dreams. It is inspired by Robert Muller, “The Millennium Man,” and is commemorated annually on his birthday. The Dream School Foundation, whose primary mission is to make every child’s dream come true, created the holiday for children, though it inspires people of all ages.

The background of National Dream Day

People are typically led to believe that dreams are similar to fairytales in that they are meant to be read but never realised. National Dream Day was established to dispel this myth and encourage people of all ages to pursue their dreams, regardless of how absurd they may appear. Robert Muller, a former United Nations assistant secretary-general, was the primary inspiration for the holiday.

Muller’s extraordinary ideas about world peace and governance inspired him to enter the new millennium urging humanity to imagine and act for a more loving and peaceful world. These ideologies prompted him to assume the moniker “The Millennium Man.” In 1923, Muller was born in Belgium. His primary residence was on the border between Germany and France. Growing up during World War II, he had direct exposure to political and cultural struggles, which influenced his cause and early decision to work for the United Nations.

He endured the atrocities of being a refugee, of being imprisoned and escaping, and even joined the French Resistance. At the age of 25, he became an intern at the United Nations, where he spent the next four decades of his life. In 1986, he retired to Costa Rica, where he served as chancellor of the United Nations’ University for Peace, an institution he helped establish. He also conceived the Dream Bench Diary and the Bench of Dreams.

NATIONAL DREAM DAY ACTIVITIES

Visit the Dreamland Bench

Make sure to visit the Bench of Dreams if you’re in the Costa Rica area at this time. It is situated at the base of Mount Rasur, close to Robert Muller’s cottage, and overlooks the University for Peace. Visitors are instructed to take a pebble in each hand, close their eyes, dream, and toss one pebble into the garden while retaining the other as a memento.

Record your desires

This day provides the ideal opportunity to reflect on and develop your aspirations. Muller advised writing them down, as he himself had composed “2000 dreams and concepts for the year 2000.” Today, take the time to write down your aspirations so that you can cross them off as they come true.

Create an Ideal Bench.

If we are unable to travel to Costa Rica, we are encouraged to establish our own Bench of Dreams or Bottom of Dreams in our community. Begin by inviting all of your loved ones to participate in the activity. It can serve as a significant source of inspiration and hope for the entire community.
