National Drive-Thru Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about National Drive-Thru Day

In 1947, Red's Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri is believed to have introduced the first drive-through. In 1948, the original In-N-Out Burger opened the longest continuously operating drive-thru in the United States.

On July 24, National Drive-Thru Day commemorates the fact that we can pick up and consume a meal without leaving the comfort of our cars. We may take it for granted, but eating in our vehicles is a privilege that one hundred years ago would have seemed absurd. The background of National Drive-Thru Day

In 1947, Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri is believed to have introduced the first drive-through. In 1948, the original In-N-Out Burger opened the longest continuously operating drive-thru in the United States.

Jack in the Box established the first drive-thru restaurant chain in 1951 to capitalise on the swiftly expanding automobile culture. The first location was a drive-thru in San Diego where consumers could purchase a hamburger for 18 cents.

When you think of drive-thru, you may immediately think of McDonald’s. Well, you may be astonished to learn that they opened their first drive-through in 1975. At the time, McDonald’s had over 3,000 locations worldwide and was well on its way to becoming the global leader in fast cuisine.

The popularity of the drive-through began to influence car design. In 1983, the cupholder as we know it first appeared in automobiles. National Drive-Thru Day was established in 2002 by the original drive-thru restaurant chain, Jack in the Box.

In the United States, there are more than 224,000 fast-food restaurants. Each year, these establishments employ more than 3.5 million people and generate more than $185 billion in revenue.

National Tequila Day and National Cousins Day are both celebrated on July 24.

The United States invented the drive-thru format for financial services.

Midafternoon is when drive-thrus are not only the quickest but also the kindest. The optimal time to visit the drive-thru is during the “snack” period in the middle of the afternoon, when wait times average 173 seconds.
