National Dump the Pump Day, observed on June 17, encourages commuters to abandon their automobiles in favour of public transportation. The day is intended to help individuals save time and money on petrol. Additionally, the day raises awareness of the diminishing fossil fuel resources. Population growth, urbanisation, globalisation, and the increased demand/supply issue have caused humans to use fossil fuels without considering their long-term effects. This domino effect has also contributed to the rise in environmental pollution and airborne diseases. National Dump the Pump Day encourages individuals to consider the future by utilising public transportation beyond a single day.

The background of National Dump the Pump Day

In 2006, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) commemorated National Dump the Pump Day for the first time. The day is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of June, which falls on June 17 this year. American Street Railway Association was founded in 1882 in Boston, Massachusetts, as its initial focus was on the nation’s railway system. In 2000, however, the association merged with the Institute of Rapid Transit, instantly becoming APTA. The charity is the only organisation in North America that represents all public transport systems. There are presently over 1500 public and private transport sectors within the APTA.

You can observe the day by taking public transportation, in accordance with the APTA’s slogan for the day, “Dump the Pump. Ride Transit.” According to one study, every dollar spent on public transport returns four dollars to the economy. If your household possesses more than one vehicle, you can choose to carpool to save up to ten thousand dollars annually on gas and gas taxes. As the years have passed, automobile technology has vastly improved, and today we have hybrid and electric vehicles that either reduce petrol consumption or eliminate it entirely. These innovations are not only beneficial to the economy, but also to the environment. Already billions have been spent on the fossil fuel industry, from the discovery of fossil fuel resources to the construction and maintenance of fossil fuel extraction facilities. Pollution has a negative impact on the environment in all these circumstances. Numerous species are close to extinction. In addition, humans have paid the price for the increase in maladies caused by pollution. For instance, millions of people worldwide perish from diseases they would not have contracted if pollution levels were lower.
