National Dunce Day 2023: National Dunce Day is annually observed on November 8. The day marks the anniversary of the passing of the Scottish philosopher John Duns Scotus. His viewpoints spanned the spectrum from eminent to ludicrous. Duns Scotus held the belief that cone-shaped headwear enhanced cognitive capabilities. He held the belief that information would descend from the apex of the headgear and enter the wearer’s brain, thereby enhancing that individual’s intelligence. Obviously, this observation is illogical, as an individual adorned with a dunce headgear is currently considered to be, duh, a dunce. One advantage of his utilization of dunce headwear was that they incentivized the wearer to acquire further knowledge in order to be able to discard the cap.

National Dunce Day 2023: History

The origin and date of the inaugural National Dunce Day remain largely unknown. Presently, the holiday is observed with the intention of fostering knowledge and uncovering the true meaning of the vilified term “dunce.”

John Duns Scotus, alternatively recognized as Duns Scotus, was a philosopher, theologian, university professor, and Scottish Catholic cleric and Franciscan friar. Born in 1265 or 1266, he died of an untimely demise on November 8, 1308. The legend that Duns Scotus was entombed alive while his servant, who was the only one to have known of his coma susceptibility, was absent is likely a fabrication. The anniversary of his passing is observed as National Dunce Day.

In the High Middle Ages, he was among the four preeminent philosopher-theologians in Western Europe, alongside William of Ockham, Thomas Aquinas, and Bonaventure. Duns Scotus influenced both Catholic and secular thought significantly. His “univocity of being” doctrines, according to which all that exists is equivalent, constitute his most renowned work. According to this doctrine, existence is the most abstract concept we possess. Formal distinction, a method for differentiating various facets of the same object, and the concept of haecceity, which refers to the alleged unique property of each individual thing, were both ideas put forth by him. Additionally, Duns Scotus constructed an intricate rationale to support the existence of God and advocated for Mary’s Immaculate Conception. Duns Scotus was most notably referred to as “Doctor Subtilis” (or “the Subtle Doctor”) by scholars several centuries after his demise in recognition of his persuading and nuanced mode of thought. 1993 saw his beatification by Pope John Paul II. Duns Scotus is largely unknown outside of the context of his writings.
