Ogden Bolton Jr. received the first U.S. patent for an e-bike in 1895 for his invention of a battery-powered electric bicycle with a hub motor mounted near the rear tyre. Hosea W. Libby was inspired by a spark of innovation to construct an e-bike with a double electric motor placed within the crankiest axle hub, which can be found in some e-bike models today. The Pedal Electric Cycle, now known as pedal-assist, was implemented into e-bikes nearly a century later. This altered the design of e-bikes, allowing motorcyclists to activate the motor with either the traditional throttle or by pedalling. Today, e-bikes are extremely popular, as evidenced by the fact that their global sales have surpassed those of electric and hybrid vehicles over the past two years and are expected to increase.
