Everyone, and we do mean everyone, regardless of geography or culture, evaluates another person's "worth" almost immediately after meeting them. (and sometimes before they even see the person).
National Each Person is a Person of Worth Day is observed annually on March 24 and focuses on the significance of recognizing the value of others and the effect this recognition has on the other person. This celebration reminds us that not only is self-worth a universal characteristic, but so is the way we evaluate the worth of others. This day seeks to encourage individuals to recognize the value of those around them and, by extension, to appreciate their own.
Everyone, and we do mean everyone, regardless of geography or culture, evaluates another person’s “worth” almost immediately after meeting them. (and sometimes before they even see the person). This explains why common beauty standards favor a certain type of person and why prominent people from different parts of the world can resemble two peas in a pod. Why do humans engage in such behavior? How do we determine the value of others? Where does self-worth originate?
According to scientists, the answer resides somewhere in our established social structures. The more societies and humans evolved, the more differences between them became apparent. Those with more wealth, land, etc., became naturally more prosperous and powerful, and consequently experienced a higher status among their peers. This, in turn, affected how people perceived them and established a perception that persists to this day.
Those who had’more’ — more money, more land, more beauty, etc. — became inherently more prosperous and powerful, and as a result, held a higher status among their peers. This in turn affected how others perceived them, resulting in a system that began to autonomously evaluate individuals based on these criteria.
While these ancient standards have evolved — minimally — some’scales’ for measuring individuals remain unchanged. Still, we have a propensity to place some qualities above others. Numerous individuals continue to struggle to develop positive self-worth due to these standards. Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, founder of the Academy for Adolescent Health, devised this day to remind people that ‘worth’ is determined by who you are rather than what you possess. Dr. Podgurski believes that self-worth must be taught beginning in adolescence in order for adolescents to develop into self-assured and independent adults. She and her team conduct youth-centered workshops and training to encourage young people to discover their self-worth and unconditionally adore themselves.
