National Eduardo Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Prior to British actor Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Eduardo Luiz Saverin in "The Social Network" (2010), the majority of people were unfamiliar with the Brazilian entrepreneur.

National Eduardo Day is annually observed on July 21. Eduardo is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the English name Edward. Edward is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘É,’ which has multiple definitions, including ‘wealth,’ ‘prosperity,’ ‘fortune,’ and ‘guardian’ or ‘protector. Famous bearers of the Spanish and Portuguese forms of the name include Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire industrialist and co-founder of Facebook, Eduardo Kobra, a Brazilian street artist, and Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, an Italian-Scottish sculptor. Fans of the animated series “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” will also recall Eduardo, the timid and kind-hearted purple behemoth who appeared in the show.

The background of National Eduardo Day

Prior to British actor Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Eduardo Luiz Saverin in “The Social Network” (2010), the majority of people were unfamiliar with the Brazilian entrepreneur. Saverin was born in Sao Paulo to a wealthy Jewish-Brazilian household. He was raised in the affluent Rio de Janeiro suburbs. Saverin, who was raised by his industrialist father Roberto and psychologist mother Sandra, attended the prestigious Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Florida. Later, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied Economics and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2006.

Saverin met Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard, and the two collaborated on a social media initiative that would eventually become the tech giant Facebook. As chief financial officer and business manager, Saverin was instrumental in the early development of the company and held a two-billion-dollar stake in the business in 2012. Eventually, Zuckerberg would force him out of the company and dilute his stake. Saverin emigrated to Singapore in 2009, where he has since resided and worked.

Sir Eduardo Paolozzo was no Silicon Valley sage. The Scottish-born son of Italian immigrants attended the Edinburgh College of Art, Saint Martin’s School of Art, and subsequently the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. Between 1947 and 1949, Paolozzo worked in Paris, where he cultivated close relationships with renowned artists such as Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, and Alberto Giacometti. In the middle of the 1950s, he founded the precursor to the pop art movement. Paolozzo taught in the 1960s at the University of California, Berkeley and the Royal College of Art. The album cover for Paul McCartney’s 1973 album “Red Rose Speedway,” the Athena sculpture at The London Oratory School’s John McIntosh Arts Centre, and the Faraday sculpture at the University of Birmingham are among his most well-known public works.
