National Fisherfolks Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Philippines

National Fisherfolk Day has been celebrated annually in the Philippines since 2000. Through the succession of Presidential Proclamations 261 the holiday became a federal holiday.

National Fisherfolk Day is a Philippine holiday celebrated annually on May 31. On this day, Filipinos from all over the country come together to honour those who are on the front lines of fishing and those who have vowed to keep fishing sustainable by combating illegal practises within the community. Because the Philippines has a significant fishery market, this day also highlights the importance of fishermen to the Philippine economy.

The background of National Fisherfolks Day

National Fisherfolk Day has been celebrated annually in the Philippines since 2000. Through the succession of Presidential Proclamations 261 the holiday became a federal holiday. The purpose of the event is to bring attention to the daily efforts of thousands of Americans. Since fishing is one of the Philippines’ primary economic contributions, fishermen are responsible for feeding not only their own families but also the entire nation.

In addition, since 2015, the holiday has also commemorated the government’s sustainable efforts to prevent illegal practises and unregulated fishing in the coastal regions of the Philippines. Fisherfolk from eight separate alliances came together in 2002 to form the Fisherfolk Movement of the Philippines in response to long-standing concerns regarding illegal activities in the fishing industry. The group demanded improved market regulations, stricter policies regarding sustainable practises, and greater cohesion among the nation’s minor producers and fishermen.

In 2005, this organisation advocated a “fluvial parade” in which fishermen protested at a World Trade Organisation meeting in Hong Kong. In 2006, another comparable movement occurred. However, it was not until 2015, under the administration of Benigno Aquino III, that the government eventually took action and enacted Republic Act 10654 to regulate the fishing market in order to improve conditions and prevent illegal practises.
