He is credited with designing the Argentinian flag and was one of the most influential leaders of independence. In the current location of the city of Rosario, he conceived of the design. His death occurred on June 20, 1820. Let’s celebrate the origins of the flag and the man who devised it on this day.

The background of National Flag Day in Argentina

The flag of Argentina was adopted in 1812 and is still in use today. It is a triband consisting of three equally wide horizontal bands of light blue, white, and light blue. In 1818, the Sun of May was inserted to the design’s centre.

As the official ceremonial emblem, the flag depicting a sun has been designated. The version of the flag without the sun is referred to as the ornamental flag. Although both versions have the potential to be considered the national flag, the ornamental version must always be flown beneath the official ceremony flag. During the Argentine War of Independence, Belgrano commanded the combat that was taking place near Rosario. He observed that the armies loyal to the Crown and those fighting for independence wore the same colours, which were the Spanish yellow and red.

Belgrano designed a new flag with the same colours as the one flown by the Criollos during the May Revolution of 1810. Despite being one of the most recognisable flags in the world, the original design of the Argentine flag was quite distinct from its current form. One of the original flag’s vertical stripes was blue, while the other was white. The flag was flown for the first time on the Batera Libertad, which was located on the Paraná River, on February 27, 1812.
