What comes to mind when you hear the term "laundry"? A drier and washer? Laundry encompasses all methods of cleaning and washing garments and other textiles, as well as drying and ironing them.
National Folding Laundry Day occurs annually on March 30. We are indeed serious. It’s time to iron those clothes, fold them up neatly, and place them back where they belong in your closet. Or, if they’ve been unused for a year, bundle them up and donate them to charity. Bring the entire family together, and let’s fold all of our laundry.
What comes to mind when you hear the term “laundry”? A drier and washer? Laundry encompasses all methods of cleaning and washing garments and other textiles, as well as drying and ironing them. It has existed as long as clothing has existed. Initially, laundry was performed in moving water bodies, allowing the water to transport away materials that could cause stains and odours. The garments were rubbed, twisted, or slapped against flat rocks in order to remove grime. The grime may have also been removed with a wooden instrument, such as a bat or a club.
Wooden or stone scrubbing surfaces positioned near a water source were eventually replaced by portable rub boards and then by washboards manufactured in factories. The wet, clean garments were then suspended to dry on poles or clotheslines. In municipalities throughout Europe, laundry was also performed communally. These locations were known as washhouses, and women were responsible for doing the laundry for the entire family. Washerwomen performed the laundry of others for compensation. These washhouses became significant cultural spaces for women, where they could meet one another and converse about anything under the sun.
In the modern era of work, work, and more work, with everyone rushing to their activities, the laundry is frequently washed and then forgotten. National Folding Laundry Day celebrates this dreaded chore. Therefore, involve the family and complete the task quickly.
Perform some laundry. Everyone has garments they’ve been intending to launder. Remember to segregate your delicates from your whites!
Fold those freshly laundered garments. No more “I’ll do it tomorrow”; complete the task immediately. Now.
Experiment with various folding techniques in order to save space and express your creativity. Make it more engaging to perform.
Some European countries merged washhouses and public baths in an effort to promote hygiene and reduce epidemic outbreaks.
In India, males traditionally did the laundry.
Some American communities prohibit inhabitants from air-drying their clothes outdoors.
In Homer’s “Odyssey,” Princess Nausicaa and her handmaidens are doing laundry by the shore when they see a shipwrecked Ulysses and rescue him, demonstrating that laundry saves lives!
A typical American household washes eight to ten bags of laundry per week.
