The background of National Gardening Day

National Gardening Day was established by Cool Springs Press in 2018 to honour the hobby of gardening and encourage gardeners to share their expertise.

Forest gardening, a forest-based food production system, is recognised as the oldest type of horticulture in the world. Forest gardens existed along jungle borders in prehistoric times. Around 1500 B.C., ancient Egyptian paintings provide some of the earliest evidence of people gardening for pleasure and to accomplish an aesthetically pleasing effect.

Following a decline during the Middle Ages, domestic gardens gained popularity during the reign of Elizabeth I. Typically containing edibles and herbs, with florals added for decoration. By the middle of the 19th century in Europe, gardens had progressively become more open and less rigid in structure, and we began to see the types of gardens that we are familiar with today.

The first cultivators in the United States were primarily harvesters. In the 17th and 18th centuries, those fortunate enough to own land and, by extension, a garden, would harvest whatever crops were appropriate in order to generate income. As villages grew larger and industrial production began, home gardening became a popular pastime in the nineteenth century. Edible gardens were replaced by ornamental gardens, and research on plant diseases and parasites was initiated.

Gardens have become a more social space over the past 150 years, and gardeners now have access to a vastly expanded corpus of gardening knowledge and tools.
