National Give Something Away Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Give Something Away Day promotes the notion that giving is preferable to receiving. The literal meaning of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is not junk or debris, but rather items that can serve someone else better.

Imagine a day when you could declutter your home, show someone you care, give modest gifts to strangers, and make the world a better place in general. National Give Something Away Day is celebrated on July 15 each year.

The background of National Give Something Away Day

National Give Something Away Day promotes the notion that giving is preferable to receiving. The literal meaning of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is not junk or debris, but rather items that can serve someone else better. The holiday encourages individuals to give without expecting anything in return. This is also a great method to declutter and donate items that no longer fit or serve a purpose.

Almost all of us have far more items than we require. National Give Something Away Day was created on July 15, 2015, by self-proclaimed giver Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher. On the Facebook page for the day, Linda advocates giving back to the community. This day, according to her, is for everyone who cares. It promotes giving to friends, family, and the less fortunate, as well as conscious consumption and a greater awareness of our carbon imprint.

Giving is the simplest act that can brighten another person’s day and sometimes bring about genuine change. Whether it is giving a compliment, giving a friend a jacket she really enjoys, or donating clothing to the less fortunate, these small actions can have a significant impact.

Even though giving is a selfless deed, both parties benefit from it. In addition to feeling good about donating and making someone’s day, we also get rid of items that we no longer need and are just taking up space. We also learn gratitude for all our benefits, and this makes us feel like responsible community-improver individuals.

NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY ACTIVITIES

Purchase a meal or beverage to gift to someone

Pay for the individual in front of you in queue at the coffee establishment. Acquire a meal-to-go and give it to the destitute person standing outside. Include socks, snacks and toothbrushes in a small purse or knapsack that you no longer need and give it to a homeless person. Compassion is a virtue that must be fostered.

Donate garments to a thrift shop.

Are there items in your wardrobes that you haven’t worn in several years? Giving away your useful clothing gives someone with fewer resources the opportunity to appear professional, perhaps even for a job interview.

Give away flowers

Flowers are a straightforward way to brighten someone’s day, bringing colour, fragrance, and a touch of nature to their desk or table. Donate flowers to your coworkers, flatmate, or significant other.

5 BENEFITS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT GIVING

An MRI revealed that donating activates the portion of the brain that produces a feeling of euphoria. The results of a study demonstrated that simply contemplating giving stimulates the same regions of the brain as exercise and eating.

A survey of 30,000 American households conducted by the Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey revealed that givers are happier than non-givers.

A 1988 study found that students who viewed a film about the life and work of Mother Teresa experienced a strengthened immune system in the following months.

When you gift someone something, you create a social bond with them that they are unlikely to forget soon.

A 2010 study discovered that when a participant donated money, the benefactors were more likely to donate themselves.
