National Good Samaritan Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

The expression "Good Samaritan" derives from one of Jesus' parables, which is found in the Bible. When a religious leader inquired, "Who is my neighbour?" This parable is recorded in Luke 10:30-37.

Every year on March 13, National Good Samaritan Day, also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day, is observed. Despite our differences, it is a day to commemorate and encourage acts of kindness and selflessness. The expression “Good Samaritan” derives from a biblical parable. Catherine (Kitty) Genovese, who was killed in New York, a short distance from her residence, is also commemorated on this day. It is believed that Kitty would have survived the attack if others had intervened. On this day, we are reminded to always look out for our brothers.

The background of National Good Samaritan Day

The expression “Good Samaritan” derives from one of Jesus’ parables, which is found in the Bible. When a religious leader inquired, “Who is my neighbour?” This parable is recorded in Luke 10:30-37. A Jewish man was travelling from Jerusalem all the way to Jericho. On his journey, he was attacked by robbers who stole his clothes and left him for dead by the side of the road.

Priest and temple assistant observed the injured individual but did not offer assistance. Then a Samaritan arrived.

In biblical times, Samaritans were a group of individuals who lived in the northern portion of the Kingdom of Israel. There was so much animosity between Jews and Samaritans that they would not even pass through each other’s towns or communicate to one another.

In the narrative, a reviled Samaritan encountered the injured individual and felt compassion for him. He bandaged the man’s wounds, placed him on his donkey, and transported him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day, the Samaritan paid the innkeeper and asked him to care for the injured man, promising to cover any additional expenses. Jesus concluded his discourse by urging his listeners to “go and do the same.”

This holiday commemorates the tragic death of Catherine Genovese, who was assassinated in New York City on March 13, 1964. Catherine might have survived the attack had someone intervened. National Good Samaritan Day serves as a reminder to assist others whenever possible.
