The tradition of sending greeting cards is centuries old. It originated with the ancient Chinese, who would exchange New Year’s greetings. Early Egyptians exchanged pleasantries on papyrus scrolls, and shortly thereafter, greeting cards made of handmade paper were traded in Europe. Germans were the first to use woodcuts to print New Year’s greeting cards. Europeans were also exchanging Valentine’s Day greeting cards by the middle of the 15th century. In fact, the earliest Valentine may be found in the British Museum. The letter was composed by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his imprisoned wife, Bonne of Armagnac.

By the 1950s, the greeting card had transitioned from a handmade, costly gift to a cost-effective method of communication, as a result of advancements in printing technology and decreased shipping costs. This was followed by new trends such as the creation of Christmas cards in London. Companies such as Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall, and Charles Bennett began mass-producing greeting cards and employed renowned illustrators such as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane.

Greeting cards have continued to evolve and become more readily available and accessible since then. They are now available in a variety of musical and electronic genres. National Greeting Card Day is a day to celebrate these endearing miniature works of art that have become synonymous with wishing loved ones well.
