National Handcuff Day is observed annually on February 20 because, according to George A. Carney, it was on this date that he was granted a U.S. patent for his “lightweight and adjustable swinging bow ratchet-type handcuff” The relevant handcuffs were created in 1912 and featured a design that was more comfortable than previous handcuffs. These handcuffs are currently used when apprehending criminals or detaining someone. Commence celebrations on this date to honour the great American innovators who have altered the course of human history.
The background of National Handcuff Day
Although modern handcuffs are different, the concept of using an object to restrain someone dates back to ancient Greece. In fact, the origin of restraints can be found in Greek mythology. Other references to restraints date back to the fourth century B.C., when Carthaginian armies employed them to hold captives. However, similar to other inventions, handcuffs evolved over time and were constructed from a variety of materials before reaching their most efficient form.
Hiatt Handcuff was the first company to manufacture handcuffs in 1780, but it wasn’t until 1850 that different styles were developed. This is due to a rise in criminal activity and an increase in the need for restraints. At that time, there were two types of handcuffs: Bango handcuffs and flexible handcuffs. The Bango handcuffs prevented prisoners from moving, whereas the flexible handcuffs permitted prisoners to move slightly and perform necessary movements such as eating and drinking.
Due to its ability to “snap” onto the wrists of criminals or suspects, the “Snap” became the most popular handcuff at the end of the 19th century. Then came the “Twister,” a device that was portable and compact. Tower manufactured the first widely used adjustable handcuffs, which offered durability and safety. These handcuffs were designed by John J. Tower in 1865 and included a series of licenced handcuffs. Tower submitted his first patent application for the round or oval bow he invented in 1871.
