National Heather Day 2023: Date, History and 5 Interesting Facts

In 1967, Heather was ranked 997th on the list of the Top 100 names for girls.

National Heather Day 2023: Heather is usually thought of as a girl’s name with Middle English roots. The name comes from the heather plant, which is a type of evergreen shrub with pink flowers and small, scale-like leaves. The flowering plant usually grows best on peaty, empty land, which is why you can find it mostly in Scotland, the northeastern U.S., and some parts of England.

National Heather Day: History

The word “heather” comes from the Middle English word “hather.” The New York Times first wrote about Heather as a given name on August 2, 1852, when Miss Heather Campbell, a mother, and her baby came to the United States from Glasgow, Scotland. The name first appeared on the American charts for girls’ names in 1935. Its use slowly increased over the next 30 years.

In 1967, Heather was ranked 997th on the list of the Top 100 names for girls. By 1972, it had jumped to the Top 10 names for girls! In 1975, almost 25,000 baby girls were born with the name Heather, making it the third most popular girl’s name in the U.S., after Jennifer and Amy. Heather’s influence has dropped sharply since then. In 2011, the name was given to less than 400 kids.

The late English actress Heather Angel (1909–1986), the American hip-hop artist Heather B. Gardner, the American civil rights activist, feminist, and political strategist Heather Booth, the American actresses Heather Locklear, Heather Morris, Heather Tom, and Heather Matarazzo, the Canadian model Heather Marks, the British singer Heather Small, the American basketball player Heather Burge, and the Miss America winner Heather White are all well-known Heathers. A victim in Agatha Christie’s 1962 book “The Mirror Cracked from Side to Side” is named Heather Badcock. Another fictional character with the same name is Heather from Dreamworks’ 2006 3D computer-animated movie “Over the Hedge.”
