The initial inhabitants of the Turks and Caicos were the Taíno and Lucayan peoples, who were believed to have migrated from Hispaniola.
National Heritage Day is observed on October 9 this year, which is the second Monday of October in Turks and Caicos. It pays homage to the culture and heritage of the islands.
As a component of National Heritage Month, the occasion is typically marked with festivities throughout the islands. In 2014, it superseded the presently obsolete Columbus Day.
The initial inhabitants of the Turks and Caicos were the Taíno and Lucayan peoples, who were believed to have migrated from Hispaniola. The Turks and Caicos Islanders continue to engage in activities such as cultivation, salt raking, and seafaring, which were conducted by the original inhabitants. The nation’s nomenclature originated from these pioneering colonizers. The term ‘Turks’ encompasses the native ‘Turk’s head cactus,’ while ‘Caicos’ originates from the Lucayan phrase ‘caya hico,’ which translates to’strings of islands.’ Seven hundred years passed during which the Taíno and Lucayan people remained the exclusive inhabitants of the islands.
Following Christopher Columbus’s arrival on the islands in 1492, the indigenous population experienced a significant decline, resulting in the islands remaining devoid of inhabitants for a span of three decades. The negative consequences of colonization, which included the introduction of novel diseases and the enslavement of the indigenous population by the Spanish, were ascribed to these. Bermuda inhabitants arrived on the islands in 1678 and established a solar-evaporated salt industry. Salt was considered a valuable commodity during that era due to its fundamental role in food preservation. Later, in 1681, the first permanent settlement on Grand Turk Island was established by Bermudian salt collectors. During the transition from the early to the mid-18th century, the islands were under British, Spanish, and French control.
The Bahamas colony included Turks and Caicos in 1766; however, it was ceded to Jamaica in 1873. Following Jamaica’s 1962 independence from Britain, Turks and Caicos reverted to Bahamas administration and became a crown colony. The Bahamas attained independence in 1973, while a British governor assumed control of Turks and Caicos at Grand Turk. The islands, nevertheless, ratified their inaugural constitution on August 30, 1976; that date has been observed ever since as Constitution Day. The government of the United Kingdom is presided over by the British Queen and directed by a premier.
