The background of National Heroes Day of Uganda

The Ugandan Bush conflict, also known as the Luwero War, the Ugandan Civil War, or the Resistance War, was a civil conflict fought between the Uganda National Liberation Army (U.N.L.A.), the armed wing of the official Ugandan government, and several rebel groups, but primarily the National Resistance Army (N.R.A.).

In 1971, General Idi Amin overthrew the unpopular President of Uganda, Apollo Milton Obote, in a coup d’état and instituted a military dictatorship. In 1979, following the Uganda-Tanzania War, Amin was deposed and Obote was elected president of Uganda. In 1980, Amin’s loyalists launched the Bush War and an insurgency in the West Nile region. Later elections restored Obote to power in a UNLA-led government. However, numerous opposition groups alleged that the elections were manipulated, prompting Yoweri Museveni to form the N.R.A. On February 6, 1981, this marked the beginning of an armed insurrection against the government of Obote.

Edidian Mukiibi Luttamaguzi made the ultimate sacrifice on June 9, 1981, at the beginning of the Ugandan Bush War, when he refused to disclose the hiding place of Museveni and the N.R.A. soldiers and was consequently executed by the U.N.L.A. On January 25, 1986, the N.R.A. won the conflict, and President Yoweri Museveni assumed office. He remains the president to the present day.

In 2001, the Ugandan Parliament established June 9 as National Heroes Day in remembrance of the valiant lives that contributed to the liberation struggle that led to the establishment of the National Resistance Movement government on January 26, 1986.
