The word'veteran' derives from the Latin root'vetus,' which means 'ancient.' This term is used globally to describe someone who has had a lengthy career in a particular occupation or discipline.
Prepare for a special recruiting celebration on 25 July, National Hire a Veteran Day. Each year, valiant members of the armed forces return to civilian life. This day was established to remind job seekers and employers that the experience and commitment of veterans can revitalise the workforce. It seeks to educate individuals on the benefits of hiring a veteran.
The word’veteran’ derives from the Latin root’vetus,’ which means ‘ancient.’ This term is used globally to describe someone who has had a lengthy career in a particular occupation or discipline. This term is predominantly used in the United States to describe someone who has been discharged from the military.
Veterans have existed for as long as there have been conflicts. This military personnel has been honoured throughout the ages by a variety of notable figures, including President Abraham Lincoln, who famously advocated for the proper treatment of veterans near the conclusion of the Second American Civil War. This conflict also spawned organisations for veterans, such as the Grand Army of the Republic and the United Confederate Veterans.
After World War I, the treatment of veterans evolved. Unsatisfied veterans took up arms and protested their treatment. During the Great Depression, one of the most significant protest movements occurred when the Bonus Army of unemployed veterans marched on Washington, D.C., hoping to receive the bonus that Congress had promised them years in the future.
Partly as a result of the treatment of veterans of the First World War, the treatment of veterans during the Second World War was modified. The majority of warring nations, including the United States, established elaborate veteran administrations. Established veterans’ organisations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars advocated for the 1944 Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, also known as the G.I. Bill. This was a law that provided benefits for some World War II veterans (also known as G.I.s) who returned home. Despite the fact that the original G.I. Bill expired in 1956, this term is still used to refer to programmes designed to aid certain U.S. military veterans.
Dan Caporale, a Marine Corps veteran and the founder of the national non-profit Hire Our Heroes, devoted many years to the employment of veterans. In an interview, Caporale ponders what would transpire if there was a designated day for employing veterans. This inquiry prompted him to create an online career fair to connect veterans with potential employers. From there, the concept of a special day took flight, and National Hire a Veteran Day was ultimately instituted nationwide. President Donald Trump signed the Honouring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act (HIRE Vets Act) in 2017, and a special HIRE Vets Medallion Programme was also established to recognise employers who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to employing and retaining veterans. This legislation bolstered National Hire a Veteran Day.
According to research, veterans stay with their initial employer 8.3% longer than non-veterans.
According to the aforementioned studies, veterans are 160% more likely to hold a graduate degree or higher.
According to a recent LinkedIn study, nearly 33 percent of veterans do not have enough paid work or are not doing work that fully utilises their skills and abilities.
This day is recognised and promoted by federal agencies such as the Department of Labour and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Approximately 200,000 military personnel exit the services annually.
