National I Am In Control Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

This day inspires us to regain control of our lives and make prudent decisions. John Hinckley opened fire on President Reagan as he walked outside the Washington Hilton Hotel.

National I Am in Charge Day is annually observed on March 30. The day is observed for two distinct causes. First, to inspire individuals to assume responsibility for their lives. On March 30, 1981, there was an attempt to kill the president of the United States. During a press briefing, the then-Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, seized control of the situation and infamously proclaimed, “I am in control.”

The background of National I Am In Control Day

This day inspires us to regain control of our lives and make prudent decisions. John Hinckley opened fire on President Reagan as he walked outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. The bullet was discharged from a pistol of 0.22 calibre. The president had just concluded his speech when six shots were discharged at him. Three of the president’s attendants were also targeted: Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and Thomas Delahanty.

John Hinckley was apprehended following the assassination attempt, while President Reagan was transported to the hospital. During a press briefing, Alexander Haig attempted to reassure the media and press that the government was operating effectively in the absence of the president and vice president. He declared himself to be in charge of government decisions until the vice president’s return.

People viewed Alexander Haig’s words as controversial. They believed he was attempting to seize power and usurp the presidency. Alexander Haig later clarified his statement, stating that he had no such intentions and was merely assuming responsibility for the executive branch until President Reagan and the vice president returned.

Since then, the room where the press briefing was held has been known as the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. James Brady, one of President Reagan’s attendants, was severely injured during the shooting.

5 STUNNING FACTS ABOUT NATIONAL I AM IN CONTROL DAY

On this date, President Ronald Reagan was struck in the left lung, with the bullet narrowly missing his heart.

After the assassination attempt, President Reagan’s popularity increased, and on the day of his return to the White House, Congress gave him a hero’s welcome.

John Hinckley was found not guilty because he was diagnosed with a personality disorder — he was inspired to kill a senator by the 1976 film “Taxi Driver,” in which the protagonist attempts to murder a senator.

Due to Hinckley’s mental condition, he was confined to St. Elizabeth Hospital, a mental institution.
