Charles Babbage conceived of the first mechanical computer, dubbed ‘the Difference Engine,’ to assist in navigational calculations in the early nineteenth century. The ‘Difference Engine’ never saw the light of day, but it inspired Charles Babbage’s next computer, the ‘Analytical Engine,’ in 1833; it was utilised in disciplines other than navigation. He is referred to as the ‘father of the computer.’ Due to insufficient funding, Babbage never saw his machine completed. In 1906, his son Henry effectively demonstrated a much simpler version of his father’s machine, which he completed in 1888. In the middle of the twentieth century, ‘early computers’ were more compact, analogue, electromechanical machines that utilised trigonometry. They were installed on a submarine in order to address problems with discharging torpedoes at moving targets.

Engineer Konrad Zuse invented the first electromechanical digital computer, the Z2, in 1939; it used electric switches to drive and relays to conduct calculations. It operated at a slow tempo. The Z2 was ultimately replaced by faster all-electric machines, such as the first fully automatic Z3 created by Zuse in 1941. All of these have filtered down to modern computers, security firms, data companies, the internet, and numerous global necessities. IT service providers are now at the forefront of ensuring that we experience all of these benefits; therefore, it is appropriate to honour them.
