National Iowa Day 2024: On February 8 of each year, we observe National Iowa Day. The Hawkeye State is recognized on this day. The state is renowned for producing nostalgic cinematic sequences, having rolling hills and rich prairie, as well as being home to exceptional individuals. Iowa has given to the history, natural beauty, and friendliness of America from the Mississippi River to the harvests in Plymouth, Harrison, and Fremont counties.
The state was given its name in honor of the Iowa Native Americans who lived there when Eastern tribes were compelled to relocate to the West of the nation by European colonization. The Iowa Territory was acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase, although settlement did not occur there until the 1830s.
In 1673, two French explorers became the first Europeans to set foot in Iowa. It wasn’t until the first permanent settlement in the early 1830s. Pioneers and Native Americans traveled through the region in the meantime, hunting and exploring. Names like Des Moines, Dubuque, Le Mars, Ottumwa, Keokuk, and Onawa are examples of places in the state with a blended French and Native American past.
The region that is now the state of Iowa was acquired from France in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Following the 1830s acquisition of Eastern Iowa from the Fox and Sauk, the region saw a quick influx of settlers. When the Territory of Iowa was created in 1838, 23,242 people were living there. It became a part of the US union in 1846. The 1850s saw a sharp increase in Iowa’s population, and the state’s last Native American massacre occurred in 1857 with the Spirit Lake Massacre.
Lawlessness, vigilantes, and lynchings characterized the early years of the American Civil War, coinciding with the shaky start of a new society. Iowa played a significant role in the conflicts that preceded the Civil War on both sides. Iowa gained notoriety for helping enslaved people use the Underground Railroad to flee from the South to Canada. More soldiers from this state than any other state were also sent to fight in the conflict. There were no conflicts in Iowa, but in 1864 there was a Confederate guerilla attack from Missouri. Iowa is now known for its lush landscapes and productive fields.
