HISTORY OF NATIONAL ISRAEL DAY

In the late 7th century, a bishop from Caucasian Albania was the first person to write down the name Israel. In 682, he tried and failed to get Alp Iluetuer, the leader of the North Caucasian Huns, to become a Christian. Most people think of the country when they hear the name Israel. Its roots can be found in the time of King David, around 1000 B.C. The first holy temple in ancient Jerusalem is thought to have been built by his son, King Solomon. Around 931 B.C., the country was split into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south.

In 722 B.C., the Assyrians attacked Israel’s northern kingdom and wiped it out. When the Babylonians took over Jerusalem in 568 B.C., they destroyed the first temple. Around 516 B.C., a second temple was built to take its place. From 1517 to 1917, the Ottoman Empire ruled most of the Middle East, including what is now Israel.

Based on the fact that the name Israel was first written down in ancient Egypt, it has been used to refer to a group of people in the Levant for at least 3,200 years. A hieroglyphic message is written on the Merneptah Stele, which is also called the “Israel Stele.” The inscription, which dates back to the late 13th century B.C. and says “Israel is laid waste, its children are gone,” was found.
