Catherine is the origin of the name Kathryn. Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian martyr who was tormented and ultimately executed by the Roman emperor Maximian, is among the most notable Catherines. It is difficult to separate the facts surrounding her demise from the numerous legends that arose in the years that followed. Supposedly, the devices used to attempt to execute her fell apart at her contact, and when she was finally executed, she bled milk instead of blood. The folklore surrounding this mediaeval figure did marvels to increase the popularity of the name.

Katherine — with a middle ‘e’ — was first recorded in England in 1196, brought back by English soldiers from their military excursions during the crusades. Katharine with a middle ‘a’ is presently more common in the United States than in the United Kingdom. Catherine and its variations have been among the top 100 most prevalent names since 1880. Kathryn was first used around the turn of the nineteenth century, although its origins remain obscure. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the name averaged around the eightieth position in the list of most popular girl’s names. During the twenty-first century, however, its popularity declined, despite many years of high prevalence.

Today, the world appears to favour more traditional variants of the name, such as Katherine and Catherine, which are frequently shortened to Kate or Katie. Kathryn is a more contemporary alternative to such a historically significant name. In the end, it boils down to a matter of personal preference.
