The Background of National Ken Day

Ken is a male Gaelic or Scottish name. It can be used as a given name or as an abbreviation for names beginning with Ken, such as Kenneth, Kenan, Kendrick, Kendall, Kennedy, Mackenzie, Kenson, and Kenelm. Ken is a Japanese name with multiple interpretations dependent on the kanji used to write it. In Cornwall, a rugged coastal region in southern England, the name Ken was first used.

Prior to the late 18th century, Cornwall spoke a dialect distinct from Devon, its neighbouring county. Local surnames were derived from the place of birth, domicile, or property ownership of the bearer. In contrast to most Celtic peoples, who favoured patronymic names, the Cornish predominantly used regional surnames, one of which was Ken. Over time, the name also gained popularity in Devon, eventually becoming a prevalent surname there.

Aside from that, Ken may have been a nickname for someone who cared for canines, as in ‘le ken,’ which is derived from the Old French ‘chien.’ Robert le Chein was the first known family member to appear in the Pipe Rolls of 1183 in Cornwall. His appellation ‘Chien’ translates directly to ‘Ken.’ However, he was not the only person with that surname, as Henry le Kenne was mentioned in the Sussex Subsidy Rolls in 1337 and Willelmus Chen was listed in the Liber Feodorum in Essex in 1212.
