The word “king” is crucial in religion. According to a famous legend, monarchs must die to protect the well-being of their subjects. It is mentioned in Sir James Frazer’s “Golden Bough,” which provides multiple examples of the concept that a king “must be assassinated when his skills begin to wane.”

HISTORY OF NATIONAL KING DAY

The English term “king” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “cyning,” which is derived from the Common Germanic word “kuningaz.” The English phrase translates to and is regarded equivalent to the Latin term’rex’ and its numerous European equivalents. The word ‘king’ is of Germanic origin and historically refers to Germanic kingship, which was a type of tribal kingship during the pre-Christian era.

By the eighth century in Western Europe, the Frankish kingdom had grown into the Carolingian Empire, and by the 10 century, the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms had combined into the English monarchy. In the ninth century, with the dissolution of the Carolingian Empire, feudalism built a pyramid of ties between liege lords and vassals, with kings at the apex. During the European Middle Ages, there was a widespread trend toward power centralization among the European kingdoms. By the late Middle Ages, Europe was home to a number of mighty kingdoms.

In southern Europe, following the Norman conquest of southern Italy, the kingdom of Sicily was established. In 1324, the Crown of Aragon asserted separate ownership over the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1217, the Kingdom of Serbia was established in the Balkans. According to tradition, the first known king was King Sargon of Akkad, who was destined to rule. In Mesopotamia, he established the first empire in 2330 B.C., more than 4,000 years ago. His name, when translated, means “true king.”
