National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about U.S. Army

The duration of the Korean War was three years, from 25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953. The war's service members faced unique dangers and challenges that distinguished them from previous generations of veterans.

On July 27, the United States and South Korea annually observe National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. This day was established to commemorate and recognise the peace treaty that brought an end to a protracted conflict. Approximately 50,000 American soldiers perished in the Korean War, over 100,000 were wounded, and thousands were detained as prisoners of war. On National Armistice Day for Korean War Veterans, we are encouraged to reflect on the service and sacrifices of American personnel during this conflict.

The background of National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day

The duration of the Korean War was three years, from 25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953. The war’s service members faced unique dangers and challenges that distinguished them from previous generations of veterans. National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day affords us the chance to honour and remember the service of these men. The southern portion of the Korean peninsula, which had been colonised by Japan, was liberated shortly after World War II. In 1950, communist North Korea invaded democratic South Korea with Soviet Union support. In response to these events, the United States deployed troops to South Korea to defend the nation’s democratic interests and retain the territory that was rightfully theirs. Three years later, an armistice was signed, and the two Koreas have remained divided ever since.

The combat resulted in more than 36,000 American fatalities and more than 103,000 wounded service members. Extremely cold weather during the Chosin Reservoir Campaign in the winter of 1950, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, posed grave risks to those serving and resulted in over 5,000 American fatalities. The wind chill dropped to -100 degrees Fahrenheit, bringing the temperature down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This meant that Korean War veterans are more likely than veterans of other conflicts to experience health issues such as nerve, skin, and muscle trauma, vascular conditions, foot-related injuries such as trench foot, frostbite scars, and skin cancer. During this lengthy conflict, these veterans may have been exposed to hazardous substances such as asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, and ionising radiation. Long after exposure, these substances are culpable for certain diseases and cancers. In fact, the nature of this exposure can be so severe that it can be transmitted to future generations.
