National Le Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Le Day is annually observed on June 24. In East Asian countries such as China and Korea, Le is a common, gender-neutral surname. It is also used in Vietnam, where it is spelt Lê, as evidenced by the Lê Dynasty, which ruled from 1428 to 1768 and was Vietnam’s longest-ruling dynasty. In the 2010 census, over 100,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were given the name Le. The actor Cung Le, the Chinese swimmer Le Jingyi, and the American-Vietnamese cosplayer Linda Le are notable Le members.

The background of National Le Day

Le is the Romanization of the Chinese name Li, which has the gender-neutral meaning of ‘cheer.’ It is a popular option in the United States, especially among Vietnamese Americans. Linda Le, a cosplayer, costume designer, and internet personality, is an excellent example. Le, also referred to as Vampy or Vamp, is a native of Oklahoma and the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants. After her incredible cosplays were featured in “Otacool 2,” a showcase book by Japanese toy company Kotobukiya, she acquired a following online. Le has attended hundreds of conventions, been featured in I.G.N. and Kotaku publications, and received praise for the quality and diversity of her costumes.

Cung Le, an actor, is another Vietnamese-American with this name. Le grew up as an immigrant in San Jose, California, where he was subjected to incessant bullying and harassment, which inspired him to study martial arts. At age 10, he began Tae Kwon Do classes, and by age 14, he was a competitive wrestler. Le was a prodigy in combat sports, competing in judo, karate, sambo, and other forms of martial arts. He was the ideal option to star in action films such as “Tekken” (2009) and “Bodyguards and Assassins” (2009) due to his extraordinary fighting skills. Additionally, Le portrayed himself in “Walker, Texas Ranger.”

Few athletes in the world stand as lofty as Le Jingyi. The Chinese swimmer has nearly twenty gold medals, including one from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In the mid-1990s, Le was the face of China’s emerging dominance in aquatic sports. Although several of her teammates were found culpable of the offence, Le never tested positive for any banned substances despite allegations of doping based on her large frame. She dominated the sport of swimming from 1992 to 2000, when she lost her form and failed to qualify for the Chinese Olympic team.
