The background of National Learn About Butterflies Day

Butterflies are winged invertebrates with delicate, broad wings. Their vibrant wings and bodies make them popular with adults and children alike, who pursue and play with them. The life cycle or metamorphosis of a butterfly is quite fascinating, as they go through four distinct stages to become the beautiful creature we all admire.

A butterfly develops from an embryo. Within three to seven days, depending on the species of butterfly, the egg hatches into a larva. As it develops, the larva or caterpillar feeds on leaves or flowers and sheds its skin multiple times; this process is known as moulting. Over the course of several weeks, the larva expands to several times its original size before transforming into a pupa. Many of these Pupas are suspended beneath a branch, concealed beneath leaves, or buried beneath the soil for 10 to 15 days before they eventually break free and transform into the adult butterfly.

In their study of evolution, scientists believe that butterflies evolved from moths during the Cretaceous period some 40 million to 135 million years ago, and that they have undergone multiple changes over the millennia to become the butterflies we see today.

National Learn About Butterflies Day is an initiative to raise awareness and educate everyone, young and old, about the ecological significance of butterflies. Due to their roles as predators and prey, a flourishing population of butterflies indicates a healthy ecosystem more than their beauty.
