National Lei Day 2023: Date, History, 5 Facts About Hawaii

Hawaii maintains a rabies-free status by adhering to stringent quarantine protocols.

National Lei Day 2023: National Lei Day is annually observed on November 11. Originating from China, the gender-neutral name Lei signifies either “thunder” or “flower bud.” Additionally, it translates to ‘child’ or’string of flowers’ in Hawaiian. Additionally, “Lei” is the romanization of the Chinese surname “杷,” which ranks 69th in the traditional Chinese compilation “Bai Jia Xing” or “Hundred Family Surnames.” There is also speculation that the name was altered from that of Lei Zu, the first woman to be officially designated as the empress and the principal wife of Emperor Huang Di.

National Lei Day 2023: History

Lei can function both as a proper noun and as a diminutive form of other names, including Kalei. Its Chinese origins date back to before the Xia Dynasty, which existed between 2070 and 1600 B.C.

As the spouse of the Yellow Emperor, the legendary Chinese empress Lei Zu or Leizu existed. The 27th century B.C. saw the invention of the silk loom and the discovery of sericulture, both of which are intricately woven into her mythos. As the legend goes, during afternoon tea, the empress encountered silkworms; a cocoon subsequently fell into her tea and unraveled. She quickly persuaded the emperor to grant her access to a grove of mulberry trees, in which she would subsequently cultivate silkworms. It is said that Leizu initially invented the silk weaving. Her discovery was immediately disseminated, and the word spread rapidly throughout the land. She was dubbed “Mother of Silkworms.”

It was known that Lei Zu and the Yellow Emperor had two sons by the names of Shaohao and Changyi. Later, the latter was confirmed as the parent of the renowned Chinese emperor Zhuanxu. Some legends assert that the Yellow Emperor bypassed Shaohao and Changyi and designated Zhuanxu as heir to the throne. Despite the lack of complete verifiability regarding the assertions regarding the authenticity of her discovery and invention, Leizu remains a revered object of worship in contemporary China.
