National Lost Dogs Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Missing Pets

Because our pets are our allies and companions, they should be protected. As playful and devoted as our dogs may be, they are also inquisitive, and sometimes their excursions cause them to stray too far from home.

National Lost Dogs Awareness Day on April 23 helps to ensure that a missing canine is not necessarily lost forever. This day was established to support the efforts of organisations involved in locating lost pets and to assist in the return of those that have wandered too far from their worried families. It was created by the directors of missing Dogs Illinois, Wisconsin, and Texas, who have assisted in the return of missing dogs since 2014.

The background of National Lost Dogs Awareness Day

Because our pets are our allies and companions, they should be protected. As playful and devoted as our dogs may be, they are also inquisitive, and sometimes their excursions cause them to stray too far from home.

One pet is lost in the United States every two seconds, and one-third of all dogs are reported missing at least once in their tenure. According to research, 80% of missing pets are never reunited with their families, with the majority eventually being euthanized in shelters.

There are various methods to prevent your dog from becoming lost in the first place and to ensure their safe return if they do. Ensure that your property is fenced in and that your dog is always on a leash when outside. It is recommended that you microchip your pet and keep their records (including your current phone number and address) up-to-date. There are a number of organisations whose solitary purpose is to locate and return lost pets. The Lost Dogs of America are also credited with creating this day.

The abandoned Dogs of America was founded in 2011 to reunite abandoned dogs with their families. Susan Taney, director of Lost Dogs Illinois, Marilyn Knapp Litt, director of Lost Dogs Texas, and Kathy Pobloskie, director of Lost Dogs Wisconsin, created National Lost Dogs Awareness Day in 2014. Since then, it has assisted tens of thousands of dogs return home.
