National Marilyn Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Events

Marilyn Monroe, an American actress, singer, and model, is unquestionably one of the most recognisable individuals with the name Marilyn. She was renowned for her comedic blonde bombshel roles.

National Marilyn Day is celebrated annually on August 17. It honours all individuals with the name Marilyn. Marilyn derives from the English given names Mary and Lynn. Marie entered the English language via the Latin name Stella Maris, which means “star of the sea.” Later, Marie evolved into Mary. The suffix — lyn is derived from the Old English word for ‘lake.’ Marilyn’s final etymology combines Mary and the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hlynn’ (torrent). According to this interpretation, Marilyn means “tempestuous sea.” Marilyn Spencer Foster was the first recorded bearer of the name in 1510 in England. In the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, the name’s usage peaked. Marylyn, Maralyn, Marelyn, Marilynn, Marillyn, Marlyn, Marrilyn, Merilyn, Merrelyn, and Merrilyn are all variations of this name.

The background of National Marilyn Day

Marilyn Monroe, an American actress, singer, and model, is unquestionably one of the most recognisable individuals with the name Marilyn. She was renowned for her comedic “blonde bombshell” roles. Monroe was the epitome of the sexual revolution of the 1950s and 1960s, becoming one of the most prominent sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Her early existence was marked by adversity. She spent the majority of her youth in foster homes and orphanages. Marilyn also struggled with a speech impediment, stuttering, for two years in high school.

Despite this, she achieved immense prominence. She began her career as a pin-up model, which lead to brief film contracts with 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures, before transitioning to a series of minor film roles.

The performances in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953), “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953), and “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (1954) contributed to her steady and global rise to prominence. Marilyn was the subject of unprecedented adulation from the general public.

In 1962, she began production on the comedy “Something’s Got to Give.” Nonetheless, she was frequently absent due to illness. She travelled to New York City in May for a gala where she sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy. There were allegations that Monroe had an affair with the president. Monroe was dismissed from the film in June.

Despite being subsequently rehired, she never returned to work. Monroe died of an overdose of sleeping drugs in her Los Angeles residence after several months of living in seclusion. Due to her history of substance abuse and prior suicide attempts, her death was ruled a “probable suicide.”

Nonetheless, some individuals believed she was murdered because she threatened to reveal her relationship with the Kennedy brothers (President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy). Others hypothesised that she possessed evidence relating the two men to organised crime.
