National marine week 2023: Date, History, Facts, Events

National Marine Week was created to encourage people to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the ocean. The holiday encourages us to value and safeguard our oceans.

National Marine Week, contrary to its name, is commemorated for two weeks, from July 24 to August 8, to honour the magnificent sea animals and plants that exist in the United Kingdom. People from all over the United Kingdom may venture out to explore their local shoreline during National Marine Week as the receding tide reveals its treasures. Spend the next two weeks protecting and appreciating marine life.

The background of National marine week

National Marine Week was created to encourage people to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the ocean. The holiday encourages us to value and safeguard our oceans. During National Marine Week, individuals reflect on the importance of the oceans to civilization, given that they are the largest ecosystem on Earth. In addition to containing 97% of the world’s water, they are also home to 80% of the world’s biodiversity, with more than 30,000 species.

However, the environment is swiftly deteriorating. The oceans are in danger because of global warming. Human activities are the primary cause, so we must do everything possible to aid in their preservation. Ultimately, everything will rapidly deteriorate if we lose the oceans. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), approximately 80% of global marine fish populations have been overfished or depleted. Due to this threat, biodiversity is in jeopardy, with grave repercussions for food security and the global economy.

According to a published study, the thawing of the world’s frozen oceans is occurring much more rapidly than previously anticipated. The world’s glaciers are at their smallest point in human history, and their retreat is responsible for one-third of the global sea level rise. All biodegradable materials, such as cigarette butts, fishing wires, and significant amounts of plastic debris, are examples of materials that are harmful to marine life when discarded in the ocean.

National Marine Week Events

Avoid impermanent plastics

Commemorating National Marine Week with reusable containers, such as coffee cups and water bottles, is a great way to get started. If you’d rather not pollute the environment, choose reusable bags over plastic ones because they perform the same functions without causing any damage to the environment.

Spend time with family

To celebrate, take the entire family outside and educate the younger children about the natural world. Observing marine life while at sea is a simple method to stimulate interest. Pick up any trash you observe while you are there.

Support regional conservation initiatives

Support the occasion by attending one of its many events. You may also donate to a charity dedicated to the conservation of ocean animals and vegetation. Volunteering is another excellent method to demonstrate support.

5 RELEVANT FACTS ABOUT OCEAN AND MARINE LIFE
