National Napping Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Napping Day was established in 1999 by a professor and his wife from Boston University. William Anthony, Ph.D., and Camille Anthony, his wife, established this holiday to raise awareness about the significance of adequate sleep and its benefits.

Ever feel jet-lagged after daylight savings? National Napping Day is on March 13, and it is the ideal day to recover from the “spring forward” I assure you that this will not be a boring lecture! It is scientifically demonstrated that napping is healthier than coffee or energy drinks. So now you can appreciate this not-so-guilty pleasure with less guilt. You may have lost an hour of sleep due to Daylight Saving Time, but you can make up for it by commemorating the day in style.

The background of National Napping Day

National Napping Day was established in 1999 by a professor and his wife from Boston University. William Anthony, Ph.D., and Camille Anthony, his wife, established this holiday to raise awareness about the significance of adequate sleep and its benefits. The purpose of the holiday was to compensate for the quantity of sleep lost due to the time change. Studies indicate that people are already at their most exhausted and sleep-deprived after the end of daylight savings time. The change of the hour is significant, but National Napping Day can make you feel as though nothing has changed.

Despite the fact that the holiday was not established until 1999, the Spanish already had a tradition of having an afternoon “siesta” This is excellent news for Spain, as daylight savings time will not significantly disrupt the routines of its citizens. The ancient Romans were also known for taking midday rests. Most people view midday rests as a relic of the past due to the hectic pace of contemporary life. Currently, naps are viewed as a symbol of extra leisure that most of us cannot afford. But in the past, sleeps were considered a necessity and were sometimes used for medicinal and religious purposes. National Napping Day was established 21 years ago, but it has yet to be recognised as an official national holiday. National Napping Day is not technically a holiday, but who doesn’t enjoy an excuse to take a nap?

NATIONAL NAPPING DAY ACTIVITIES

Take a snooze

This may seem evident, but due to our hectic schedules, we often neglect the needs of our bodies, such as rest. The best method to appreciate this holiday is to relax and get comfortable. Close the curtains, place your phone on silent, don your favoured pyjamas, and unwind.

Create a slumber playlist.

Even when we want to relax or fall asleep, we cannot always seem to switch off our minds. Creating a playlist of soothing music can aid in brain relaxation and make it simpler to fall asleep. This is a wonderful method to discover new music and unwind.

Hang up your phone

This is the most difficult one I know! However, when we are distracted by our phones, it is difficult to relax our body and mind enough to fall slumber. If you can’t stand to turn it off, set it to silent and attempt to take a 20-minute nap.

5 FACTS ABOUT SLEEPING THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

If you are dozing for the recommended amount of time, you should not dream.

Only a 90-minute nap, which is not recommended, will allow you to hallucinate.

A 20- to 30-minute nap will leave you feeling energised, while a 60-minute siesta will leave you feeling revitalised but groggy.

Longer naps can induce REM sleep, which is extremely advantageous to cognitive function.

Naps lasting 90 to 120 minutes include all stages of sleep, including REM sleep.
