National New Mexico Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about New Maxico

National New Mexico Day is annually celebrated on June 14. This day is celebrated to honour the state of New Mexico and its citizens. New Mexico may be sparsely populated and dominated by desert, but it is one of the most educated states in the United States. National New Mexico Day honours the achievements of the state. Decades before it was ultimately granted statehood in the United States, New Mexico fulfilled all criteria for statehood.

The background of National New Mexico Day

On January 6, 1912, the state of New Mexico was formally established. It was the country’s 47th province.

In the sixteenth century, Spanish explorers traversed the territory that is now known as New Mexico. It is said that they discovered well-preserved artefacts from the Pueblo civilization, which flourished in the 13th century. In the year 1540, numerous explorers ventured to the state of New Mexico in response to rumours that these regions contained concealed treasures.

In 1609, Pedro de Peralta was appointed as the governor of the territory, which was then referred to as the Kingdom and Provinces of New Mexico. A year later, Santa Fe was designated as the capital city of this newly created territory.

Only after Mexico attained independence from Spain did New Mexico become a state in its own right. In 1821, however, New Mexico merged with Mexico and became a province of Mexico.

The state of New Mexico was ceded to the United States with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, following the conclusion of the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846. Nonetheless, the civil conflict continued.

Only after 1886 did the violence cease. Soon after, a large number of individuals from neighbouring regions began to settle in the state. The state’s ranches and animal husbandry flourished. In 1912, New Mexico was officially recognised as a state of the United States.

The 14th of June is used to commemorate the struggles of those who established the magnificent state of New Mexico and to preserve its sanctity. This day commemorates significant events in the history of New Mexico and pays homage to the territory and its indigenous inhabitants.
