National Ohio Day 2023: Every year on November 2, National Ohio Day is held to honor the day that Ohio became a part of the United States. On this day in 1803 President Thomas Jefferson signed an order that the state of Ohio’s borders and constitution were approved. Even though the Buckeye state wasn’t officially admitted until 1953, when it was added to the union after the fact. Ohio, the 17th state in the U.S., is a place with a lot of history and culture that is important to the whole country. Ohio has been an important part of the union since it became a state in 1803. It is the biggest exporter of weapons, workers, food, ideas, and culture to North America. The name “Ohio” comes from “Iroquois,” which is the name of the great river in the northwest area. Before Ohio became a state and was recognized as such in the early 1800s, its past is full of fierce battles between Indians and Europeans. A lot of peace deals and summits were held there to stop the wars that were going on to take over the Ohio Country’s fertile land.
It wasn’t long after the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783 before the Ohio Country became one of the five free states. When the “Treaty of Greenville” was signed in 1795, it made it possible for immigrants and locals to live together peacefully. After five years, on November 2, 1803, Ohio became the first state from the Northwest Territory to join the union.
When Ohio joined the union, it became a place of strategic importance to the U.S. because of its good geography. During the War of 1812, the state was the site of battles. As the years went by, the Buckeye state became a major economic hub for the country. At the same time, roads, railroads, and canals were built. By the middle of the 1800s, Ohio had the third most people of any state in the country. Ohio was a major source of soldiers and other resources during the Civil War. At the time, President Abraham Lincoln praised Ohio for “saving the union.”
