National Packaging Design Day is annually observed on May 7 in the United States. This is a special event honouring the art of package design and the designers who construct them. It promotes an appreciation for the artistry of packaging design, which has become a crucial aspect of modern marketing. In terms of sales, consumers evaluate a product’s packaging design. It is the only activity in which the adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” is wholly disregarded.
Prior to the late 19th century, packaging containers were costly. They were designated primarily for luxury items, such as jewellery or gourmet foods. These packaging materials were not single-use. Eventually, some manufacturers saw an opening to market a “after-use.” The company Dixie Queen began designing its punch-cut tobacco containers to resemble picnic baskets and, later, lunch boxes. On the tin “basket” was imprinted the company’s name, and these items remained popular into the early 1900s.
In the late 19th century, the emergence of dual-use packaging provides some of the earliest examples of branded consumer packaging. Consumers continue the tradition by, among other things, using recyclable, branded carrier bags from their preferred grocery stores.
The first paper cardboard package was invented in 1817. The commercial production of paper bags in England was the result of a creative innovation. In 1844, the first commercial production of paper bags began in England.
Francis Wolle, an American, devised the bag-making machine in 1852, paving the way for the adhesive paper sacks we use today. NABISCO developed the first branded consumer product in 1890.
Design Packaging established National Packaging Design Day in 2015 to raise awareness of package design, presentation, and its function in a product’s brand. The Registrar of the National Day Calendar designated May 7 as the day to observe National Packaging Design Day on April 22, of the same year.
