The background of National Park Service Founders Day

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act on August 25, 1916. The National Park Service was established by the Act. As a division of the Department of the Interior, the National Park Service safeguards 400 areas in all 50 states, territories, and the District of Columbia. They are entrusted with the protection of 84 million acres of national parks!

Yellowstone, the first national park, was established in 1872. Congress enacted legislation to preserve the territory as a public park for the American people’s benefit. This made the United States the first nation in the world to establish a public park for the primary benefit of its citizens. This would be the first of many steps taken by the government to establish and preserve for future generations national land, forests, coastal regions, wildlife refuges, and historic sites.

At the time of the establishment of the National Park Service, there were only 33 federally created areas. In Washington, D.C., this included the National Capital Parks, the National Mall, and the White House. Today, the National Park Service is responsible for more than 400 areas, including 59 wholly designated national parks. They range in size from Pennsylvania’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial, which covers only.02 acres, to Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, which covers a vast 13.2 million acres. The National Park Service employs 22,000 individuals in permanent, temporary, and seasonal positions. Additionally, an additional 340,000 volunteers are registered with the service. These sites receive nearly 300 million visitors annually.
