The National Pawnbrokers Day History

The Latin word for “cloth” or “clothing,” “patinum,” is where the term “pawn” originates. The history of pawnbroking dates back thousands of years, to China in the East and the ancient Roman and Greek empires. Pawnbrokers offer cash loans in return for collateralized commodities and property.

Once the borrower repays the loan with interest, the pawnbroker returns the collateral. Clients who fail to make payments forfeit their belongings, which the pawnbroker may sell to cover the loan balance.

Pawnbrokers, however, can also function as a nonprofit. In 1450, a Franciscan priest named Barnaba Manassei founded the Monte di Pietà venture in Perugia, Italy. The initiative provided low-interest loans for pawned goods to those in need of financial assistance. The goal was to get people to donate to the church rather than pay interest. The concept became well-liked in Italy before expanding to other parts of Europe.

However, people didn’t always view them as heroes. A law against brokers was passed in 1603 and was in effect until 1872 with the intention of undermining counterfeit brokers in London. Fences were the name given to brokers in this group. The Pawnbrokers Act of 1872 in England created laws to safeguard pawnbrokers who inadvertently sold stolen goods. It also set general principles that still characterize the market today, such as the interest rate on pawned assets.
