The background of National Power Rangers Day
Power Rangers can be traced back to the 1970s, when Marvel Comics and the Japanese television production company Toei Company agreed to exchange ideas. At that time, the Japanese adaptation of Spiderman was developed. Around the same time, three series of “Super Sentai” were created and garnered immense popularity in Japan.
Power Rangers was developed as the American equivalent to “Super Sentai.” The narrative was slightly altered to meet American television standards. Super Sentai’s Zord and Megazord were adopted by the creators of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” to battle monsters and machines in the show.
The show was banned in New Zealand because it was deemed too violent for minors. “Power Rangers” was distributed by Saban Entertainment, which the Walt Disney Company acquired in 2001. The seasons “Power Rangers Jungle Fury” and “Power Rangers R.P.M.” were released in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In 2010, businessman and Saban entertainment proprietor Haim Saban repurchased the franchise from Disney.
On the occasion of their 20th anniversary, Nickelodeon decided to air the season of “Power Rangers Megaforce.” Hasbro, a toy and board game manufacturer, declared August 28 to be National Power Rangers Day. Inside Edition published “Power Rangers: The Ultimate Visual History” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Power Ranger television series. The magazine included a catalogue of Power Ranger toys.
